Frees Big Don is a name that has become synonymous with one of the most significant victories in the history of horse racing. This legendary thoroughbred raced during the 1970s, setting records and capturing the hearts of fans all over the world. Born in 1972, Frees Big Don was owned by businessman Nelson Bunker Hunt and trained by Marion Van Berg. He was a horse that would go on to make history, having won 27 consecutive races, which at the time was the longest winning streak in American horse racing history.
Frees Big Don was a horse that was bred to run, standing at over 16 hands tall, with a muscular build and an imposing presence. His unique blend of incredible speed and great stamina made him nearly unbeatable on the racetrack. He was a horse that simply could not be caught, with a racing style that saw him break from the gate and maintain his position at the head of the pack from start to finish.
Frees Big Don’s most famous victory was in the 1974 Santa Anita Handicap. He had won 25 races in a row at that point, and the Santa Anita was one of the biggest races in the world. Despite being the heavy favorite, many experts doubted whether he would be able to continue his winning streak in such a prestigious race. However, true to form, Frees Big Don put in a performance for the ages, winning the race by an incredible eight lengths.
Frees Big Don was retired in 1976, having won 32 of his 35 career races. He was inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame in 1979, and his legacy as one of the greatest horses of all time is secured. Despite having been retired for over 40 years, Frees Big Don’s legend continues to inspire new generations of horse racing fans, and his name remains synonymous with greatness.
